Big congratulations to the Research Faculty, Engr. Ian Benitez of FEU Tech Innovation Center (FTIC), for the publication of his paper titled “A Critical Overview of Local Energy Communities: State-of-the-Art, Real-Life Applications & Challenges, and Tackling the Academia-Industry Gap” in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (Elsevier).
This paper presents a comprehensive review of Local Energy Communities (LECs) by exploring their operational models, control strategies, market roles, and implementation challenges in the shift toward decentralized energy systems. It highlights the technical, economic, and regulatory barriers to the effective deployment of LEC, particularly in peer-to-peer energy trading and grid integration. To bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application, the study proposes advanced monitoring technologies, adaptive control strategies, dynamic pricing, and updated regulatory frameworks.
This publication contributes meaningfully to global and leading efforts of FTIC toward achieving clean energy access and sustainable urban development by highlighting the vital role of research in driving innovation and shaping the future of clean energy systems.
