Shaping the Future of Education: Utah Valley University, FEU Tech, Unite for AI Innovation Workshop

Posted: 2026-05-22

FEU Institute of Technology Group of Schools and Far Eastern University (FEU) welcomed a distinguished delegation from Utah Valley University (UVU) for the “AI-Focused Workshop on Education and Sustainable Futures,” held at the FEU Tech Innovation Center (FTIC) last May 5th.

The event gathered faculty members and academic leaders from FEU Manila, FEU Alabang, FEU Diliman, and FEU Tech in a dynamic exchange of ideas centered on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in education. The workshop emphasized the importance of global collaboration in shaping future-ready, sustainable learning environments.

Opening the program, FEU Chief Information Officer Mr. Enrique M. Amigo touched on higher education institutions’ (HEIs) responsibility in the exponential growth of AI, stressing how institutions must adapt to emerging technologies to remain responsive to the evolving needs of learners and society.

Representing UVU were prominent academic leaders and experts, including Dr. Baldomero Lago, Chief International Officer and UNESCO Chair; Dr. Carl Canlas from Information Systems & Technology; Dr. Kelsey Hixson-Bowles from English & Literature; Dr. Jerevie Canlas from Social & Behavioral Sciences; and Mr. Ben Payne from the MS Cybersecurity program. Each of their talks were packed with both familiar and fresh insights into ways that, contrary to popular belief, the education landscape is changing for the better because of AI.

In her talk alongside Dr. Jerevie on Generative AI in Higher Education, Dr. Kelsey clarified that the education sector was due for a redesign; the proliferation of AI simply exposed this need. The key is to make learning even more valuable with AI, for the students and faculty alike. Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Jerevie shifted the focus on building AI into the curricula—not to catch “AI users” but to integrate utilization as output improvement.

The rest of the morning plenary sessions explored key themes such as ethical considerations in AI and cybersecurity and the role of AI in advancing environmental stewardship and sustainable futures. These discussions provided valuable insights into how AI can be leveraged not only to enhance curriculum design and policy development, but also to foster responsible and inclusive innovation.

Following the plenary, faculty members engaged in focused breakout sessions that encouraged deeper collaboration across disciplines. Academic leaders from both schools discussed strategic directions and identified opportunities for joint initiatives, forming part of a broader dialogue on “ways forward” as institutional partners.

Through initiatives like this, the FEU Tech Group of Schools continue to strengthen its global partnerships and reaffirm its role as the School of Innovation. The collaboration with Utah Valley University marks another step forward in advancing innovative, ethical, and sustainable approaches to learning in an increasingly AI-driven world.
